Underwriters Laboratories is an independent organization founded by William Henry Merrill in 1894. For 131 years, its specialists have been continuously testing products for safety, including resistance to mechanical damage, as well as the risk of electric shock and fire. Initially, the company focused on electrical and fire protection equipment. Today, it covers almost all product categories, including indoor and outdoor lighting.
However, UL certification is particularly important in the lighting industry, especially in the context of electrical installation safety and the use of luminaires in various, often extremely demanding environments – from domestic spaces to office buildings and industrial plants. Testing the resistance of lamps to overheating, as well as determining their failure rate, ensures that products can be freely traded around the world.
