Fluorescent lamp – what is it?
A fluorescent lamp is a gas-discharge light source in which light is produced by exciting a phosphor coating located on the inside of the tube. For our team, this term is also important because it illustrates how lighting technology evolved before LEDs became widely adopted. Fluorescent lamp – how does it work?
The operation of a fluorescent lamp is based on an electrical discharge inside a tube filled with gas. This process generates ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which excites the phosphor coating and causes it to emit visible light. This mechanism differs from that of a traditional incandescent bulb, where light is produced by heating a filament.
As a result, fluorescent lamps have different efficiency characteristics, start-up behavior, and maintenance requirements. Proper operation requires additional components to assist ignition and stabilize the lamp. When designing or upgrading a lighting installation, it is therefore important to consider not only the light source itself, but also the luminaire, power supply system, required illumination levels, and the working conditions within the space.
Fluorescent tube – key characteristics
The colloquial term fluorescent tube is still widely used, especially when referring to long tubular lamps installed in workspaces. One of their main advantages has always been the ability to provide uniform light distribution over a large area, making them well suited for applications requiring extensive illumination.
At the same time, this technology has several limitations, including dependence on auxiliary control gear, warm-up time, potential flickering, gradual performance degradation during operation, and the need for proper disposal at the end of its service life.
Fluorescent lamp – applications
For many years, fluorescent lamps were commonly used in environments where even illumination of large areas was essential. They can be found in offices, workshops, garages, classrooms, retail backrooms, corridors, and technical rooms.
Their popularity stemmed from their ability to deliver relatively high light output while consuming less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Today, LED luminaires are increasingly chosen for these applications because they offer better control over lighting performance, light distribution, durability, and maintenance costs.
